Elective doctor insurance makes sense if you want to choose your doctor or therapist freely and flexibly without having to think about the cost of treatment. You receive personalised and comprehensive medical advice as well as holistic treatments - from physical to mental health, depending on the insurance package you choose.

As elective doctors set their own fees, it is difficult to determine a generalised cost. In general, the cost of a visit to an elective general practitioner is between 80 and 120 euros, while an appointment with a specialist (such as an orthopaedist, dermatologist or cardiologist) costs between 150 and 200 euros. (last update 05.2024) If you see an elective doctor without private health insurance, you will have to pay the full cost of treatment yourself.

After payment, you can submit an application for reimbursement to your statutory health insurance company. Usually around 10-20% of the invoice amount is reimbursed.

Private health insurance, on the other hand, covers up to 100% of the costs.

Allianz offers three elective doctor packages, customised to your needs. The premium depends on the scope of benefits, age and state of health. You can also take advantage of a combined discount if you take out special class insurance at the same time.

Martha M., 34 years old, bank employee, resident in Burgenland, reads more and more about the shortage of specialists in the public sector in Austria and also knows from her own experience that she often has to wait many weeks or months for medical appointments. She therefore decides to take out elective doctor insurance with Allianz. Due to her sedentary job, it is important to her that physiotherapy is included in the insurance benefits, which is why she opts for the Extra package.

Monthly premium for Elective Doctor Extra: € 100.02.
(Comfort: € 45.46 / Max: € 144.01)

If Martha also takes out special class insurance at the same time, her premium is reduced to: € 80.02

The premium amount is determined by a health check with several questions about the insured person's lifestyle. It is essentially based on your desired scope of benefits, your age and your state of health.

Elective doctors are doctors in private practice who do not have a health insurance contract, which means that patients have to pay the treatment costs themselves. Part of the costs can be reimbursed by the statutory health insurance fund.
With private supplementary insurance, the costs incurred for visits to elective doctors are covered up to the agreed amount. This form of outpatient health insurance gives you a free choice of doctor and short waiting times.
Allianz offers you three different elective doctor packages so that you can customise the benefits you require to suit your personal needs. The amount of the premium for your elective doctor insurance essentially depends on your desired scope of benefits, your age and your state of health. You can also take advantage of a combined discount if you take out special class insurance at the same time.
Once you have submitted your invoice to your health insurance company, you will generally receive 100% of the remaining costs in the case of partial reimbursement by the statutory health insurance and 80% reimbursement in all other cases. For dental treatment and dental health services, you will be reimbursed 60%.

SUBMIT INVOICE

After visiting a doctor or receiving health care (e.g. physiotherapy), please settle the invoice and copy or photograph it together with the prescription or referral.

Note: Since 1 July 2024, elective doctors are legally obliged to submit invoices paid by patients directly to the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK), which saves you as a patient the effort of manual submission.

If you expressly agree to this, elective doctors will send your invoices electronically to the ÖGK, you will automatically receive a refund and can submit the ÖGK invoice directly to us via the Allianz customer portal.

As a rule, you will receive up to 100% of your invoice amount back (except in the dental and jaw area).

Elective doctors may be exempt from this rule. You should therefore enquire about this possibility with your elective doctor.
In this case, however, you still have the option of submitting your invoice to the statutory health insurance fund yourself.

Submit receipts to the statutory health insurance company. You will receive a written notification.

After receiving the notification, submit the invoice via the customer portal or the "My Allianz - Austria" app.
You will need

  • the statement from your statutory health or health insurance fund
  • the invoice or fee note for the service utilised
